Greater Waco Chamber : 2024 TRC : "Exploring the Great Outdoors" TRC Campaign

LEAD Program

The LEAD program is a business and education partnership sponsored by the Greater Waco Chamber to develop business leader-student relationships for educational improvement and life success. The mission of the LEAD program is to develop long term relationships, which educate and expose students to various business fields within the greater Waco community. This is expected to improve the student’s knowledge and skills base and motivate them to graduate and pursue a higher form of education that will in turn ensure greater employability and quality of life. Students are mentored by a business professional as selected through the LEAD process. Each LEAD professional mentors two to four students at Waco High School, University High School, Rapoport Academy, Harmony Science Academy, La Vega High School, Midway High School, Methodist Home and Lorena High School. Students enjoy opportunities to visit various business sites and higher education institutions. It’s a special way for our community to show our students that we care about their development. The business exposure enhances our student’s capacity to understand the impact graduation and higher education will have on their life. Students and business leaders mutually benefit from the long-term relationship. Program success includes: having more than 200 mentors since the program’s inception, more than 400 students, 100 percent graduation rate with all seniors attending college or technical school, more than one hundred businesses visited each year, multiple visits to college departments at Baylor University, McLennan Community College and Texas State Technical College, more than $270,000 awarded in scholarships since 2010, and multiple summer jobs and internships provided to program graduates due to participation in the program Students are mentored by a business professional as selected through the LEAD process.
