Greater Waco Chamber : 2024 TRC : "Exploring the Great Outdoors" TRC Campaign

LEAD Program

The LEAD program is a business and education partnership that pairs students from 10 public high schools across Waco and McLennan County with business leaders in order to foster mentor relationships that educate and expose students to a variety of business fields. By increasing their awareness of higher education and potential career paths, students expand their horizons, develop individual goals and improve their employment prospects, empowering them to achieve a lifetime of success. In addition to exploring higher education and career opportunities, the students learn essential personal skills including resume writing, interview conduct, etiquette, car maintenance, self-defense, networking, teamwork, communication and attitude. LEAD strives to motivate students to graduate high school and pursue higher education which, in turn, ensures greater employability and an increased quality of life. Many LEAD students are first generation high school graduates. Their success impacts them personally, while also changing the trajectory of their families for years to come. “The LEAD program has impacted my life, outlook and perspective of the world. I wish to impact the lives of future generations by continuing the LEAD Legacy,” said Alexandria Monroy, 2017 graduate of University High School. “The LEAD Program truly equipped me with the confidence, tools and experience that I can apply to my life as I strive for excellence every day,” said Carnealus Manning, 2017 graduate of Waco High School. Students are mentored by a business professional selected and vetted through the LEAD process. Each LEAD professional mentors two to four high school students from Waco ISD, Rapoport Academy, Harmony School of Innovation, La Vega ISD, Midway ISD, Methodist Children’s Home, Lorena ISD, Connally ISD and Robinson ISD. Students enjoy opportunities to visit various businesses and higher education institutions. It’s a special way for our community to show our students that we care about their development. The business exposure enhances the student’s capacity to understand the impact graduation and higher education will have on their life. Students and business leaders mutually benefit from the long-term relationship. “The LEAD Program is a perfect example of the difference we can make when a community fully buys into something,” said Joe Nesbitt, Co-Founder of the LEAD Program. Program success includes: having more than 300 mentors since the program’s inception, more than 400 students, 100 percent graduation rate with all seniors attending college or technical school, more than one hundred businesses visited each year, multiple visits to college departments at Baylor University, McLennan Community College, Texas Tech, Tarleton and Texas State Technical College, more than $331,500 awarded in scholarships since 2010, and multiple summer jobs and internships provided to program graduates due to participation in the program.
